A couple of weeks ago I arranged to meet my son in town for dinner. I’ve written about the drama of travelling the one kilometre to our meeting point, and how stressful I found being in gridlocked traffic for around an hour. However, on the bright side, I did manage to snap a few photos along the way.

I spent about 20 minutes travelling along Wyndham Street and couldn’t help noticing how peaceful and welcoming the church appeared; lit in white and gold against an inky sky.

Once the most prominent buildings on the landscape were religious or civic structures. Now we celebrate capitalism with ever-taller towers and apartment blocks. I do like the way the Sky Tower changes its colour scheme though. The purple felt very reassuring as my car crawled up Hobson Street.

This week is Challenger’s Choice at Sally’s Phoneography and Non-SLR Digital Devices Photo Challenge. I’m not sure quite how to categorise my contribution; it is architecture, shot at night, from the street . They could have been travel photos, but I wasn’t travelling too much, so maybe still life would be a better description?

  1. Su,Dear ! What heavenly night shots you captured ! Every cloud has a silver lining and here we are with some magnificent photos ! The church looks so celestial against the night sky and the huge constructions are so imposing ! Loved the juxtaposition of the divine next to the power of capitalism … Man never stops being ambitious.

    • Thank you Doda. I did indeed have a wonderful dinner with my son. He is growing into a fine young man – and was the strength and support I needed when I was stuck for so long in traffic – until his phone went flat and I couldn’t text him anymore 🙂 I have a great love of St Patrick’s Cathedral. I always seem to encounter it on cold wet nights and it radiates the kind of warmth I think churches ought to. Thank you again. 🙂

    • Thank you Sally; the first image is the only one not shot through the car window, and is probably closer to doing the building justice than the others. I don’t do much night photography either but when I do I enjoy it. 🙂

  6. I love all your shots! They have such character and speak of where you were when you were taking them. and beauty of the buildings shine through the car windows… I like the idea of the comfort of the cathedral as well as the purple!
