Amongst the 100+ sculptures at NZ Sculpture OnShore this year, ‘Call Me I Love You‘ by Auckland artist Brendan McGorry, is proving very popular. A classic “phone box” with a twist; it has the cruciform shape of a traditional church. The smart phone inside the booth works.
Last weekend we had record crowds at the exhibition, and as I arrived I watched people queuing to experience this work of art. And all I could think was “when I was a girl, people actually did this all the time.” And for most of those queuing, it was a wholly novel experience.
And a sign of the times; people aren’t using the phone to call home … they’re taking selfies!

So funny – selfies instead of calling home. Maybe we’re all so connected now the need isn’t so great. Looks like the weather is behaving!

Thanks Jill. Yes, the weather has been amazing. According to the forecasts our Gala should have been a washout, and although it was windy, the sun was out. The weekend was amazing and it’s still looking ok today. We’ve had great coverage in the Herald and on TV3 and the Feed the Kids installation is attracting huge attention. 🙂 Must admit I’m looking forward to getting my life back in a few days.

There are very few red phone boxes left over here now Su. I can’t imagine having the patience now to seek one out and find the correct money before making a call, progress comes with a two edged sword, life is so fast. The one designed for your exhibition is a great twist on the originals though and selfies are definately a sign of the times.

We have no red phone boxes at all in NZ (well not in actual use). I saw a phone booth recently and it made me realise how rare they are. I love Brendan’s phone box; it’s clever and taps very cleverly into a vein of nostalgia that is perfect for our audience. 🙂
