Last night the proceeds from NZ Sculpture OnShore 2014 were given to Women’s Refuge NZ. I’m so proud to have been part of this wonderful event, which has raised $180,000 for Refuge’s work. Photo: Su Leslie, 2015.

Thank you; it was a very special moment to be there when the cheque was handed over. This amount is the largest that Women’s Refuge receives outside of state funding, and our donations allow them to do projects that help them build capability and deliver better services — not just always be the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

Well done. Yesterday I was watching a programme on CI channel about domestic violence and that the police were once trained not to interfere at all – the aggressor was told to take a walk around the block to cool down. So it is nice to know that there is a safe haven for women in danger from their partners. I feel safe now that my ex doesn’t know where I live. But being a small city, chances are we will bump into each other at some point. But he is small minded and is not prepared to give me a settlement at all so that I have to be careful when we make our offer. Hopefully the visit he had from the boys in blue at New Year should prevent him from hassling me. But he thinks he is above the law so I just have to watch over my shoulder. I am still seeing someone from Women’s Refuge or at least in phone contact which is great.

I think one of the big challenges Refuge still faces is entrenched attitudes that “domestic” violence somehow doesn’t count as “real” violence. I’m glad you are feeling safer, and have a contact person at Refuge. Take care π

Fantastic achievement Sue, you must be thrilled with the amount raised. Will you be involved with another fundraiser for this charity?

Thanks Julie; we are really happy with the result. As for the future, hm. There are some issues with organizational politics at the moment, and I’m not really interested in the bun-fights. I’ll continue as long as I can do something useful and not have to waste time on political in-fighting. π
