What I hoped was just a snuffle turned out to be much more serious and the vet couldn’t offer any hope of improvement. After almost 15 years with us, Sirus’s life ended peacefully in my arms. He is missed. Photo: Su Leslie.
I don’t think I’d realised how much our pets become part of the family until yesterday. My son has no memories of life before cats, and we’re holding our other fur-baby (Sirus’s sister) very close right now. 🙂
I agree with you. When one’s beloved pet passes, that’s when we wake up and realize the importance of their journey with us. Your lucky to still have Sirus’ sister.
Oh Su, we’re so sorry! We know how much of a family member a fur-person is. That 15 years will always be the era of Sirus. No doubt the house feels very hollow. Peace to you and yours.
Yes that’s so true. I’ve been looking at the kindergarten pictures my so drew of his family. They always included the cats. He drew some really lovely pics of them.
I was so grateful to the lovely young vet who saw us and really understood my need to be close to Sirus. The Big T is in the US at the moment, and the boy was at work, so I had to make the decision by myself. I would have loved for my boys to get a chance to say goodbye, but it would have been cruel to let Sirus suffer any longer for our sakes.
This is why I wish cats and dogs lived much longer than they do. It’s hard to say goodbye to a pet that provides so much unconditional love. So sorry for the loss of Sirus.
Thank you Mary. It is especially hard for my son who has never really known life without the cats. The poor kid is allergic to them (something we discovered after the fact) and so for him to cuddle them and even be around them is a big deal, but he’s never questioned that’s what he would do.
Oh Su, I’m so sorry. The vet we chose for our wonderful rescued miniature schnauzer is the vet who helped me through a previous loss. I’m glad your vet let you hold Sirus. It can make a huge difference for both you and your beloved pet. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. ❤
Hi Hannah; thank you. It’s only with hindsight that I really appreciate how sensitive and thoughtful the vet was. And thinking about it; that has been my experience with vets generally. I wish I could say the same about people-doctors!
Thanks 🙂 the more I think about it, the more I’m glad it was a bit unexpected. I don’t know I could have taken that trip to the vet knowing what the outcome would be.
Oh Su, I’m just catching up to this post and feeling deep pain for you and your loss.
Theo hasn’t been in our lives very long – not quite 4 years – but he is so deeply interwoven into my heart. I can’t imagine your sadness after 15 years together with Sirius.
oh, Su, I am so sorry to read of the loss of your fur-baby. I have only just found your blog. Yes our beautiful Companion Animals leave a huge gap in our lives when we lose them. My thoughts are with you at this very sad time. So wonderful you could hold Sirus and give comfort.
So sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. Take care

That is very true. She is also a bit poorly, but seems happy and is loving all the attention.

You were courageous to let him know he was loved until his very last moment. I admire that enormously. I was unable to be so strong …

That’s what Chic did with The Captain; and also because he knew I was a pathetic wimp.

My condolences–I can relate, because my 18-year-old cat passed away two years ago.

So sorry to read this – I’ve done this twice with much-loved cats and understand how hard it is, even though it’s for the best.
