    • I’m the same. It’s interesting that the whole poem, written in 1914 after the Battle of Mons, is quite a lot like Brooke’s ‘The Soldier’ which was also written that year. Brooke died in 1915, but Binyon was a Red Cross volunteer in France later in WWI. It got me wondering if the tone of his poems changed as war dragged on and he experienced it first-hand — to become a bit more like Seigfreid Sassoon and Wilfred Owen? Must go and check that out.
