They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.— Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), For the Fallen

It is a time to think and reflect about the condition of our world. It makes me feel so sad.

Hi Leslie; I agree. It seems that so little has been learned from the past and the appalling suffering endured by that generation.

As long as someone is making money from the wars they will continue. The people who call the war should be standing at the front with the troops. If that were the case they wouldn’t so quick to do so.

Binyon’s lines never fail to move me, whether at the Dawn Service or elsewhere.

I’m the same. It’s interesting that the whole poem, written in 1914 after the Battle of Mons, is quite a lot like Brooke’s ‘The Soldier’ which was also written that year. Brooke died in 1915, but Binyon was a Red Cross volunteer in France later in WWI. It got me wondering if the tone of his poems changed as war dragged on and he experienced it first-hand — to become a bit more like Seigfreid Sassoon and Wilfred Owen? Must go and check that out. Thanks for commenting and sparking my curiosity about this. Cheers, Su.

I haven’t; I’m not a big radio listener. But this sounds really interesting. Thank you for sending the link.

I used to listen to the radio a lot as a child. I have returned to those childish ways and love listening to the radio again.

I listen to podcasts from BBC Radio 4, but very little local content, although I do enjoy Eva Radich’s Upbeat when I remember to listen!
