Despite (no, actually because of) the storm that has been sweeping down the country, the Big T and I went to the beach yesterday. Floating around the rocks at Takapuna beach, we found these coloured bubbles — an oily residue that has foamed in the tide.

Although not quite perfect spheres, they reminded me of crystal balls, and I found myself peering inside — heartened to see the Big T in there with me.

But as Dolly Parton said:

The magic is inside you. There ain’t no crystal ball.

    • That’s the awful part. All of the rock pools in the area we walked had patches of the oily foam. They were small, but frequent. I guess a spill from a leisure craft or something similar.

    • Hi Jo. That’s so true. The oily patches were small, but frequent on that part of the beach. I feel so sad walking on North Shore beaches these days because I remember a time when we used to pick (and eat) pipis and cockles at Cheltenham! I’m not that old, but these days I wouldn’t dream of even looking for shellfish.
