The gerbera is such an uncomplicated flower; unburdened by deep metaphorical significance. Blooms like lilies and roses carry enormous cultural baggage, but with a gerbera, what you see is what you get.
If gerberas were characters in a genre movie, they’d be the under-valued, ever-supportive, wise-cracking best friend. The botanic equivalent of Thelma Ritter.
But of course, genre rules can be broken. The side-kick can become the star; mysterious and complicated. Can we re-imagine gerberas at the heart of a romantic tragedy; Brief Encounter, Love Story, Moulin Rouge?
“I’ve fallen in love. I didn’t think such violent things could happen to ordinary people.” — Laura, Brief Encounter. Image: Su Leslie, 2016. Edited with Snapseed and Stackables.
“I know that this is the beginning of the end. Not the end of my loving you but the end of our being together. But not quite yet, darling. Please. Not quite yet.” — Alec, Brief Encounter. Image: Su Leslie, 2016. Edited with Snapseed and Stackables.
Or film noir?
“When your head says one thing and your whole life says another, your head always loses.” — Frank McLeod, Key Largo. Image: Su Leslie, 2016. Edited with Snapseed and Stackables.
“With my brains and your looks, we could go places.” — Frank Chambers, The Postman Always Rings Twice. Image: Su Leslie, 2016. Edited with Snapseed and Stackables.

Love Thelma Ritter. And gerberas.

Thanks Susan. I was a bit worried no-one would remember who she was.

Thanks. I prefer the faded, sad look — but then I still have the real thing in full colour to enjoy 🙂

Thanks so much Amy. I had such fun with this post. It started out as a simple image and just sort of took on a life of its own.

Absolutely beautiful Post! My granny had favored this flower so much and I loved how she loved it, so this is just a real joy for me to see! Thanks!

Thank you. I love how simple things can evoke memories of people we’ve known and loved. It helps to keep them alive in our hearts. My grandmother had a terrible sweet tooth, and I can’t see meringues without thinking of her.

In the top pic, they all look SO happy, even droopy! 🙂
I guess you have an iPhone…excellent work, Su.
Perhaps gerbera, one of my faves too, can become the new rose in the expression of love?

Stunning photos, Sue. I had to look up Thelma but when I saw the words Pillow Talk I remembered her immediately. I feel like watching Pillow Talk again. 🙂

Thank you. I haven’t seen Pillow Talk; I know her from All About Eve and Rear Window mainly — and from academic stuff about typecasting women in Hollywood (my MA thesis — a million year ago — was on women in thrillers).

I wonder if much has changed in typecasting in those million years. 😉

My feeling is — not much. I tend not to watch mainstream films these days, so I’m a bit out of touch with “Hollywood”

I am very out of touch, too.

You so dramatically photographed gerbera with your cine camera,Su!Rules are made to be broken, and Lady Gerbera hasn’t lost her “simple” charm and grace, even dressed in blacks and greys. You’re such an inventive mind 🙂 xxx

Thank you my dear Doda. Cinema is my first love and I find that eventually in my thinking, all roads lead to “the movies.”

Su, lovely, we both have Gerber’s eloquence in our thoughts. I especially enjoyed the color versions. The hues add to the gerber’s personality. Nicely interpreted. And your quotes and juxtapositions lend another dimension to the flower’s presence. Happy Photo Challenge.
