I took the photo in Hyde Park, Sydney, but forgot to look for an identifying plaque. I’d never seen anything quite like it before, but when I checked this morning with a friend, she thinks the plant is called Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos).
I was making it my mission to find out what this stunning plant is … I want one … and the closest I found in texture and vividness was a Kangaroo Paw. Then I thought of checking the comments. 😮
The Kangaroo Paw is a Western Australian native and named after the claw-like flower bract. I have grown one before (they grow from a rhizome), but it was a tiny scrawny thing and not at all like this stunning plant. They are drought tolerant – which means I can’t kill them easily.
Thanks for that Christine. It is such a gorgeous plant; and I’d just never seen one before my last trip to Sydney. Hardy is good; though I’ve been known to kill cactus.
Wow it’s amazing and what a fantastic photograph, Su!

Okay, I’m not familiar with it. Very nice though.

Guess we won’t be starting up a plant nursery anytime soon!
