I finally updated the version of Snapseed I’ve been running and found a new set of filters. Called Noir, they add grain and contrast. Being a long-time fan of film noir (I even wrote a whole section of my MA thesis about feminist attempts to subvert the genre), I couldn’t resist trying out the new toy.

Black and white is this week’s theme of Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge, at Lens and Pens by Sally.

    • No worries! It was a long time ago, and with hindsight it was a pretty shambolic thesis. I looked at the possibilities of subverting the conventions of Hollywood thrillers / noir films to make feminist films. At the time, NZs film industry was very small (and pretty male-dominated), but two films had just been made by women — ‘Trial Run’ and ‘Mr Wrong’. Both were thrillers in their way and Mr Wrong particularly was very noir-ish. Academically it wasn’t brilliant, though as a project I think the idea had merit. I would certainly do it differently now!

      • That sounds like an amazing thesis, Su! Much more interesting than mine!! And I do share your sentiment: I would also do it different now!! But that´s pretty normal, I guess, as we grow older, our persepctive on things change and so does our writing approach. On the other hand, I´m totally glad that I don´t have to write it again 😉 Have a lovely weekend! xxxxxx

      • 🙂 Yes, I’m not sure I would enjoy academic writing again. I do like the need for rigor and accuracy, but I get so bored by all the referencing. So much easier just to add hyperlinks!

      • 🙂 Every time I had to do academic writing, I’d always tell myself that I’m make proper notes and do the references as I went along, and every time I’d forget, or get sick of how it interrupted the flow and then I’d have to go along afterwards and track down the references again and write them all up properly. So much more fun writing a blog!
