Things turn up in unexpected places. When the boy-child moved out a few weeks ago, he unearthed a glass paperweight — given to me as a leaving present from a job I had about 25 years ago. I probably hadn’t seen it in almost that long.
I love glass art, but have always thought the paperweight, of clear glass with air bubbles, just a bit boring. It still pales into comparison with other pieces I own, but since it’s been sitting on my desk these last few days, I’ve enjoyed photographing it and imagining what other interpretations might be put on the image.
This week macro is the theme for Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge over at Lens and Pens by Sally.
The boy-child moved out! I missed that important moment if you mentioned it before.

A few weeks ago. I’ve been meaning to write a post about it, but thought I should wait a wee while so not to tempt fate. So far, so good. He is coping well, visits often, doesn’t bring dirty laundry home and actually articulates his appreciation of us. Result!!

Paperweights are apt subjects for macro, and you captured such marvelous shapes in the abstraction. Happy Photo Challenge.

It reminds me of little beads of mercury.

I feel like paper weights are a thing of the past now but it makes me wonder why people had to hold their papers down and what changed so that it doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore. Is it because workplaces don’t use fans? Or we use more paperclips which help to hold down the papers? Where I work, we still have to process and work with a lot of paper but I’ve never seen anyone there use a paper weight!

You know, I’d never really thought about it. I worked in offices for years and never saw anyone with a paperweight either. They fall into the “pretty, but obscure” category of gifts, and now I’M wondering how they came to be there in the first place.

I thought this was liquid metal or something of science – and to hear it is a paper weight – and how cool to have it out after all these years…..
