Not globally. But it’s one of those things that NZers instantly recognise. Because it’s sited on Cuba Street — one of our more famous (and colourful) streets, it tends to feature in everyone’s holiday photos from Wellington. This is the best video I’ve seen that has the bucket fountain. https://youtu.be/UpGaIDm0azU It was shot 5 years ago on a day it snowed in Wellington. It almost NEVER snows in Wellington, and it’s cool watching people react to what could be a once-in-lifetime event on Cuba Street.
Wish I could answer that! It’s quite common to see (mainly men) walking around in shorts and t-shirts (and sometimes bare feet) on cold days. This weekend we’ve had gale force winds blowing off Antarctica, and I lost count of how many under-dressed guys I saw. The Big T used to do it when we lived in the UK. Even in winter he’d “pop down to the local shop” in bare feet. Sigh.
It is pretty cool. It’s in the middle of a really funky shopping street in Wellington, so there are always lots of interesting people around. I was looking for a video of the fountain, but I remembered this one, which has the fountain in the background, but is more interesting because it’s a very Kiwi reaction to a pretty rare event. Hope you like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpGaIDm0azU
Wow! Thank you, Su! This video is just amazing!! Love the reactions and wished we were just as amazed by snow over here ๐ Sadly most people here only seem to see the disadvantages like dirty streets etc Only very few people enjoy it. Also loved the claire de lune part accompanying this wonderful video ๐ The fountain is just so cool! Thanx again – you’re a star!!! ๐
Now that’s something different.

Is this something peculiar to Wellington? And if so, why? I’d love to see a video!

I know what you mean. Novelty is wonderful, but the reality of trying to go about normal life when it snows does change one’s perspective. ๐
