Greenhithe Wharf is only a few minutes from my house, and sometimes forms part of my morning walk. For the last few months, I’ve been photographing the view up Lucas Creek — although a wet winter has meant that mostly that view has been shrouded in low-lying cloud.
Yesterday the tide was full, the sun was shining and despite the fact that our current 10-day weather forecast is for rain, and more rain, it does finally feel as though spring has arrived.
“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of natureโ the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
— Rachel Carson

Sure, nature is an amazing “invention”… ๐

Love the second shot, Su. I get a good dose of nature’s healing as often as possible! ๐

Thanks Janet. It is the best balm for jagged, jaded souls sometimes.

Su, strongly emotional Carson quote, and I am drawn over and over again to that second capture. It’s stirring. Lucky you to have that view of nature so close to you. Happy spring, we’re beginning autumn. Happy Photo Challenge.

Thanks Sally. I do feel very lucky to have such a beautiful spot on my doorstep. I hope our autumn brings you the kind of reflective peace it does me.

Stunning! For me, especially the first one.

I prefer that shot too Anabel. But for me it’s probably partly that I am so pleased to actually see the horizon!

Isn’t it nice to be so close to water? Do swim in the river?

Nice post and great pics!
I like the Rachel Carson quote about the “repeated refrains of nature”. My son attends a Waldorf School (based on the educational theories of Rudolf Steiner), and natural cycles, such as the progressions of the seasons is a common theme that helps the kids understand and feel comfortable in their world: “the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

Thanks Ian. Some of my nieces and nephews attended Steiner schools in NZ and I’m familiar with the emphasis on the natural world. I think it would be wonderful if “mainstream” schools paid more attention to nature in their teaching philosophies.

We have friends who are on their way home from NZ—I can’t wait to hear what they have to say. Your photos make it look like heaven on earth.

I wish it was! Beautiful natural environment but subject to the same greed-driven degradation as everywhere else in the world I’m afraid. Still, I hope your friends enjoyed their time here.

From the emails they’ve send, I’d say they loved it. They spent five weeks split between Australia and New Zealand.

Both shots are just brilliant, Su! And the quote is perfect and so true… I also believe in the healing qualities of nature ๐ Thereยดs sometimes nothing better for the soul (well, except a wonderful chocolate cake, but who says that you canยดt have both? ๐ ).
