Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. — Seneca
Until recently, I only knew that quote as a line from the song Closing Time by the American band Semisonic.
Not that the provenance really matters in terms of the basic wisdom of the words — as any gardener who has just dug home-made compost into their vegetable patch will tell you.
As the Big T and I are moving (albeit at glacial speed) towards changing and simplifying our lives, it becomes clearer that the end of one era facilitates the start of another. Especially as the boy-child has flown the nest.
I shot the two photos in this montage last week on a road-trip through the central North Island. As I spend more time out of Auckland, I realise that small-town — or at least provincial — New Zealand is almost certainly part of my new beginning.
I’ve played with the colour editing a little bit, and am not sure which version I prefer. What do you think?
This post was written for Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge at Lens and Pens by Sally. The title is also a line from “Closing Time.”
Hmmm…difficult choice. The first photo is perhaps the one which appeals most to me. They are both beautiful and poignant ( with a very subtle touch of vanitas?)

π I’d never seen the word vanitas, and you’ve set me off on a new path of discovery. Thank you π

The second one for me, with the more natural colours…

My choice would be the softness of the first one. It seems to complement both the pink of the flower and the delicate lacy quality of the leaf.
I’ve always liked that quote. Endings often imply a bit of sadness, but overlaying the concept of a new beginning on the horizon provides both hope and anticipation.

Agree on both counts.

Thanks Joanne. I like it too — even though I always thought it was just a song lyric. When I think about it, human cultures traditionally marked seasonal changes in exactly that way — a mixture of sadness and hope. π

I like the first one—the leaf appears more delicate and thus the contrast is greater with the flower.

Thanks Amy. There seems to be something of a consensus around that image, and it is the less edited. A lesson for me I think in knowing when to stop!

Well, that’s the point, isn’t it? To see what else you can do and then assess it? Both are lovely!

Su, these are lovely and ethereal with heart and soul mixed into them. I lean toward the first for its softer interpretation. Great song choice to mirror your journey. Happy Photo Challenge.

I prefer the first one too, Su. Something about the subtly and softness of it.

Lovely montages Su – a fine track too – the lead singer of Semisonic sounds much like Michael Stipe

I hadn’t made that connection; but you’re right!

I like both versions and your song choice Su, we are trying to move too but tackled it this summer in a manic headless chicken way, obviously that did not work, glacial seems a better way forward.

Thanks Julie. We’ve been moving one step forward, two steps back for so long now, even the headless chicken approach is starting to appeal π

Love them both. The first one because of its softness and prettiness. The second because of its earthiness and naturalness (not a word). And I also quite like that song, it’s a great quote.

I’m in favor of both of them. The first is softer, more delicate while the second is more dramatic. The first emphasizes the flowers, the second, the leaf. They’re both a wonderful example of photomontage.
