I mentioned in yesterday’s post about spending time in my friend Claire‘s art studio. It was an interesting experience for me, sharing a creative space with others, but working on my own project.

I’m sure the space itself — well-lit, colourful and joyous — helps the creative process.

    • Yes, it is a lovely space. I’ve done a workshop there before and it is very communal, but somehow we all managed to get lots done. Working alongside others is quite new for me. I have as a freelance and literally alone for about 20 years, and my “default” working style is to be alone. My output is probably higher on my own, but it was interesting to explore different styles of writing in a new setting. 🙂

      • I know how it is to work with others in a creative space as I share my pottery workshop sometimes with friends I invite. It can be highly productive at times, and at others it’s more or less like the Mad Hatter’s tea party 😉 I can really work well together with my mom though, either chatting away or huddled up in silence completely focused on the work at hand. With painting or drawing I require to be on my own though. 😄 xxxxx

        • It is interesting how we can work with some people and not others. I find it difficult to share my kitchen with most people (except the Big T and my boy-child) and usually work alone on most things. Like you though, I do work well with my mum. I don’t travel well with her though; she hums all the time and randomly reads out street signs. It’s really disconcerting and drives me nuts. xxxx

          • Haha! I can relate to all of it! In the kitchen I’m the chef, but I wouldn’t mind a terribly good kitchen boy who knows when to jump out my way 😉
            Traveling with my mum isn’t easy either, she’s not good in making compromises and truly awful when it comes to packing! 😂

          • Hehe. My mum is brilliant at noticing trivia (or perhaps more kindly, I should say minutiae). One time we were in Sante-Chapelle in Paris. It was a beautiful morning and the sun was streaming through the stained glass windows. The light was perfect and I was lost in “joy and wonder” kind of thought when my mum said –quite loudly — “I expect they have to get special cleaners in to do those windows.” Mothers, gotta love em.

          • Well, at least you could get your mum into the church to admire its art (in a way 😉 )! Mine needs to be bribed into it 😉

          • 🙂 Actually my mum is pretty game for most things. She surprised me a couple of years ago by enjoying the art in the Baltic Centre in Newcastle. She normally has very traditional views about art, but really loved some huge canvases by a contemporary German artist whose name I have completely forgotten. And she didn’t mention window-cleaning once! Hope you have a great weekend. It is Auckland’s Anniversary Day on Monday so we get an extra holiday — and the weather looks like it might finally settle into summer. Woohoo!!! xxxx
