Reminder of a long-ago holiday in Corsica. Honey pot repurposed. Image: Su Leslie, 2017
In 1997 the Big T and I went to Corsica; our last holiday before the boy-child came along. In the town of Patrimonio, we bought local honey in a ceramic jar. It was delicious; dark and strong and positively singing with wild herb flavours.
At some point since then, the jar found a second life as a pencil holder, sitting on my desk as a daily reminder of a week in paradise so long ago.

It was! I think it was the first time I really tasted bush honey and I could hardly believe the complexity of the flavours.

it always amazes me how honey can be so healing.
and the ceramic container is so much nicer than a plastic bear bottle some honey containers are…

Manuka honey is wonderful; very dark and rich. I didn’t like it much when I was little, but it’s grown on me. Manuka is a NZ native, and the plant has medicinal properties which I think are transferred into the honey. It’s great for sore throats, etc.

ahhhhh – NZ? does not surprise me. and I keep hearing about the healing properties – I will let you know when i get to try it.
and side story – a while ago I had some virus that went around – everyone here did – but I could not keep anything down – not even soup. It was a quick illness – only lasted a day – but that single day was rough. well honey and lemon in tea rescued me… and a little swedish bitters under the tongue.

Our grandmothers understood simple medicines so well. Honey and lemon is such a powerful combination. Honey is also great on wounds to stop infection. I’ve even used it on my furbabies.

It took me years of looking at it every day to really appreciate how beautiful the actual pot is! The glaze is very like a range of ceramics that were widely available in NZ when I was a kid, so maybe there is a comfort factor too.

Wow! And Eco-house! Are you going to build it yourself with the Big T or is it already in place? I once saw a documentary about one situated in Australia and was deeply impressed. The guy who build it also was an artist and his home seemed more like a unique an wonderful living museum than just a house. Ah, and bee hives!! I just loved the intricate organization of them. And if course, the lovely honey 😉 Yep, I think I really need to see all this for myself someday! 😀 xxxxxxx

We want to build, or at least do some of the work and be part of the design process. Everything we do has a long gestation period, so you’ll have plenty of time to save for the trip. 🙂 xxxx

Isn’t it. Latin origin and the root word for mellifluous — which is one of my favourite words and one I sprinkled liberally through my conversations for years without making the connection to honey.

I love having souvenirs on my desk, especially if they are useful. It reminds me that even though I am working now, I do travel and I do get to experience new places sometimes.
