He did look pretty fed up, but at least didn’t have to face the indignity one boy did, when the bull calf he was showing decided to sit down in the middle of judging. That poor kid couldn’t get the animal to stand up again and the frustration on his face ….
I love A&P shows; they are like all the best bits of old-fashioned New Zealand. Farm kids showing off the calves and lambs they’ve reared, baking and jam-making competitions, farm machinery, wood-chopping, Highland dancing, lots of food you’re not allowed to eat the rest of the time …
I lived in a small town for a while as a kid, and the A&P show was the highlight of the year. When all the farm community would come together. I couldn’t resist going to the show on Saturday. Luckily the Big T has similar memories to me so we both enjoyed it. Hope you’re having a great weekend. π xxx
IΒ΄ve never been to a similar event but would really love too! It sounds like so much fun – well, except when your calf looses π
Especially the part about Highland dances and lots of food are very attractive to me π
Have a lovely week! xxxxxxx
We can add going to an A&P show to your itinerary for the NZ trip! I’m having a lazy week; caught a cold and am feeling a bit slow. Hope your week is going well. xxxxx π
I had a lot of those infections when I was a kid but this is definitely the worst I had so far π¦
The meds don’t seem to work and I’m kind of loosing hope… (it’s already the 2nd round) Sorry – there’s nothing worse than selfpity! Please take care of your cold and keep those airways clear! Have a lovely weekend! ππ xxxxx
Oh Sarah, I’m so sorry. I really do understand and empathise. I attack all my colds with lots of garlic and chilli to help keep my sinuses clear, but that only works in the early stages. I’ve tried those horrible saline rinse-things too. Actually that did seem to work one time. Sending you huge healing hugs and love xxxxx
Thank you so much for your huge healing hugs! π I’m sending some right back to you!
Garlic, chili, ginger and mustard can definitely help a great deal but foremost with viral infections I think. I like to use them too then. Aargh! Saline rinses – I did those too when I was a kid and nearly ruined my mucuos membranes! I doubt that real seawater would be that desastrous.
I’m going to try to distract and comfort myself today by watching all the Harry Potter movies – it’s been a couple of years now since I last watched them and I always do that when feeling poorly π
xxxxxxx
Oh I wish I was there too. I’ve never binge-watched all the Harry Potter movies, though I do periodically re-read the book series. I love the idea of watching the kids grow up on screen, and seeing the tone of the movies change. I think ‘The Prisoner of Azkaban’ is my favourite movie. Take care and get well soon. xxxxxx
Ok, I have to admit that I didnΒ΄t manage to watch them all on one day… it was simply too much π So I divided them on two and tonight itΒ΄s going to be the last part. DonΒ΄t really look much forward to it though as I always end up bawling π
I also love to reread the books every once in a while, theyΒ΄re simply magic – beautifully written, and the imagination is just wonderful – I always wish that I had come up with it π Actually IΒ΄m rereading the last part right now π
The prisoner of Azkaban is also my favorite movie!!! and book I think π Alfonso Caron did a marvelous job! As well as all the actors of course. ItΒ΄s in this part that one can grasp what fine actors those kids are going to be… stunning. The only unnerving thing is that itΒ΄s the first time I watch a movie with Alan Rickman in it after he died… still canΒ΄t quite believe… makes me even bawl more! Or maybe itΒ΄s just because IΒ΄m not well π (actually it isnΒ΄t, IΒ΄m build near water π ) xxxxxx
The first Alan Rickman film I watched after he died was “Die Hard” (wince!). It was on TV one night we were feeling a bit brain-dead and I’d forgotten he was in it. BTW: have you ever seen “Truly, Madly, Deeply”? It is the first film I ever saw Alan Rickman in and he was utterly brilliant. It’s a great movie. If you ever watch it, bring lots of tissues and maybe buckets. It’s funny and sad and uplifting and always has me in tears.
Ouch! That’s really not a good title after that – but I remember he was really good at being evil π Also be looked great, same time I think, like Robin Hood.
Aww – “Truly…” is I a of my favourite movies ever!!! I’m also a huge fan of Juliet Stevenson, she was so stunning in this one, wasn’t she? I watch it every once in a while and I think it’s time for another rewatch… π
We really are kindred spirits! It’s one of my favourites too. Juliet Stevenson is amazing. She has a really powerful presence. Have you seen ‘Drowning by Numbers’? It’s a bit older than Truly … and was made by Peter Greenaway who studied painting and makes films that are visually like Rembrandt paintings. Definitely worth seeing if you can find it. xxxxx
No, I haven’t yet and just googled it – sounds absolutely fantastic! Will definitely look out for a copy, local library, Amazon… π Thank you!
She’s also reading audio books and is absolutely magnificent at it! If you want to give it a go, try out “Never let me go” by Kazuo Ishiguro or
It is good to watch. There’s a long tradition in NZ (and probably lots of countries) of rural kids rearing animals and showing them at events like this. Rural schools have lamb and calf shows and it’s a great way for children to be recognised for the really hard work they do looking after the animals.
Oh, poor boy! The disappointment on his face quite breaks my heart… But maybe he will be more lucky next time! Have a stunning weekend! xxxxx

There weren’t many entries in the field, and the kids worked so hard to control their huge animals. It was amazing to watch.
