Springlands Primary school, Blenheim. Just 6 or 7 years old. We had great bushes of Swan plants outside the classroom. Room 3. We sat watching every playtime quietly urging them on. Their transformation has always stuck with me. Special times.
I’m so glad it brings back happy memories. The only other time I’d seen a monarch emerge was at my mother-in-law’s place. She nurtured swan plants especially for the grandkids to enjoy these moments. π
It’s just dawning on me now that these butterflies are hatching in your fall. I don’t know anything about butterflies, but I would have thought spring time would be the most logical time.
This is providing all of us with endless entertainment π
π Apparently the butterflies that hatch late in summer/autumn will survive over winter and only breed next spring. Those that are born/breed early in the season (spring/early summer) normally live about 6-8 weeks, but the last-born will fly somewhere warm (in NZ) and stay dormant for a few months. Cool huh? This means that our “babies” will hopefully form part of next season’s breeding cycle.
Thanks. And as expected, it was totally by chance. We’d just got home and “popped out to check the babies”. Luckily I was still holding my bag with my camera in it.
π I was practically jumping up and down with excitement because we’d been hanging around for so long waiting for one to emerge and pretty much given up and gone out. We had just arrived home again. xxxxxx
Amazing – very exciting! π

I watched April the giraffe give birth online earlier today (not live though)—isn’t nature amazing?
