Sour orange sounds really interesting. What do you use the fruit for? We bought all our citrus trees as saplings from a place that specialises in saving heritage varieties. All the trees grow really well in our area, and it’s great to know that we’re helping to preserve our ecological heritage.
For a long time we just thought they were weird lemons so up until recently we have used them as such; juice for marinades and so forth.
But after a bit of research …. all Hail Mighty Google …. we might have a go at Marmalade this year.
We can’t grow this sort of thing where we are, but we’ve had some fabulous oranges for the store recently and when I visit my parents in Arizona each January, I always bring back a lot of homegrown lemons in my carry-on bag. đŸ™‚
Thanks Leslie. I do feel lucky, although because I grew up with everyone having citrus trees in their gardens, I didn’t realise how lucky we were until I moved to the UK and casually asked my cousin why she didn’t have a lime tree in the garden for her gin and tonics!!
Outdoor. It’s probably a bit cold in the South Island, but here in Auckland most old gardens have at least a lemon and / or grapefruit tree. Last year was the first that my orange tree had any fruit, and it’s looking good for this harvest too. I’m so pleased — I planted it about six years ago and was beginning to despair! đŸ™‚

Thank you Emilio. They are; small, sweet and they taste like the mandarins I remember as a kid. We don’t seem to get that kind in the shops anymore.
