Re solace – to me, he looks like he belongs as a figurehead on the prow of a ship. At sea, being becalmed was bad, thus solace of the wind. Without the title, he looks to be leaning gratefully into a stiff breeze. (One would have to be mindful of those background poles when photographing this fellow!)
That’s a really good point Christine. He does look like a prow figurehead. To be honest, I didn’t know the sculpture was called that until I looked it up for the photo caption. I’ve always known it as “the swimmer”!
Impressive. Reminds me somewhat of Anthony Gormley’s sculptures on Crosby Beach.

Thanks Jude. I didn’t know about the Crosby sculptures, so have just Googled them; really impressive!! I do like Anthony Gormley’s work. π

Looks like he’s about to dive into the water?

Hehe. I think people know the sculpture as ‘the diver’ or ‘the bather’ rather than it’s proper name.

Interesting title—yours or the sculpture’s? Why solace?

The sculpture! My caption didn’t appear when I posted this from the iPad, so I’ve updated it. I’m not sure why it got that title.

Hehe. I think Wellington’s notorious wind is holding him back!

Interesting that the detail photo looked more realistic than the photo of the full sculpture. Really lovely.
