  1. Cool image and I love that quote. It make me think of music. I play the piano (and lots of other things) and I can tell you that music is not just notes. It’s the space between notes, the lack of sound in contrast to those notes, the rubato that chooses to hold a note a little longer than the composer says to. Without all of it, you just have notes. Anyone can play notes. A musician understands the spaces between notes as well as they understand the notes themselves. When you can bring that together, then you have music.

    • That’s an awesome explanation! I am so not musical, but I understand what you mean in a visual sense — the way that white space has to work with imagery. The same is true of the written word. I’ve worked in document design, and how the words actually look on the page is as important as how they read — the spaces between groups of words contribute to the meaning. 🙂
