… five minutes with some agapanthus
I’m really enjoying that delicious lull between Christmas and early January, when the city’s commuters are granted an extra couple of hours in bed, and my early morning walks are free of the usual traffic noise and pollution. In that calm, I find myself much more aware of the world around me.
Not that the agapanthus is easy to miss.
It seems that every garden and roadside, every park and verge is home to clumps of these large, mainly purple, flowers.
And, standing at waist-height, they are ridiculously easy to photograph — even for “she-of-the-dodgy-knee”. Easy to spend five minutes photographing in fact.
So my Friday Flowers are also a RegularRandom offering this week.
RegularRandom is a challenge hosted by Desley Jane at Desley Jane Pictures. If you would like to join:
- choose a subject or a scene
- spend five minutes photographing it – no more!
- try to not interfere with the subject, instead see it from many angles, look through something at it, change the light that’s hitting it
- have fun!
- tag your post #regularrandom and ping back to this post
I like these macro shots. Flowers have their own special beauty. Well done!

The city has emptied out, and it’s so nice not being stuck in traffic around town 🙂

I was so taken with these that I looked to see if they grow in Massachusetts. It seems the ground is too cold so they’d have to grow in pots. They sure are beautiful!

They do grow well in containers 🙂

It seems you have to keep them warm over the winter—which wouldn’t work for me. 🙂

I think the deciduous ones are more hardy and you can mulch them (or cover with fleece) over winter.

Thanks—I might give it a try, though with temps in the single digits here (Fahrenheit) this week, I am not sure anything would protect them!

The colour is lovely Su, nice to see the deeper colour down the centre line when it opens.

🙂 aren’t they wonderfully coloured. I’m looking for a place where enough are growing to give some sense of how they seem to turn the whole landscape purple.

You’ve managed, with these photos, to make the agapanthus look really lovely which is some feat for this Aussie where the poor agapanthus is considered a weed by many councils. Fabulous photography, Su!

The agapanthus is on the NZ weedbusters site. It’s beautiful but does cause problems.

Thank you Heather 🙂 They’re considered a weed here too, and yet, Councils seem to plant them on reserves at the same time as telling everyone how invasive they are. Given how extensively they cultivate roadsides, I can see how they are a threat to natives.

I love this time of year, too. It’s serene like the colour of the agapanthus.

Yes! That’s it. Auckland feels deliciously empty 🙂

Beautiful!
I love that when I go into the office this week, I get to have a nice, easy commute without so many people (note: I went into the office once this week, but I still enjoyed that commute).

I totally get that. I know people who always work between Xmas and New Year because they are so much more productive in that time — less commuting, fewer distractions.

Your subjects and photography are amazing, It shows that you enjoy what you do. I was involved in photography for 3 or 4 years when I was a teenager. I am new to blogging and feel that great photographs really enhance a blog (along with great writing as well!)

Thank you so much Robert. I agree about how much photos can enhance a blog. I actually started blogging about my family history, and my photography developed as I realised I enjoy blogging and set up ZimmerBitch.
