Gift
You tell me that silence
is nearer to peace than poems
but if for my gift
I brought you silence
(for I know silence)
you would say
This is not silence
this is another poem
and you would hand it back to me”
― Leonard Cohen, The Spice-Box of Earth (1961)

Oh what a star, Leonard was. Thanks for posting this, Su. And a perfect poem with your silence.

I can take quite a lot of it. I really prefer to work in silence, and hate sharing workspace with others.

I vary – sometimes, I like the silence for working, other times, I want the background noise of sports talk radio or something similar which I can have on, but ignore.

🙂 I’ve never learned to filter background sounds. I’d like to; I suspect that music in particular would be quite mood-lifting while I work.

Thank you. That poem is one of the first of his I ever read. I was sixteen, and it had such an impact on me.

The cloud looks like an angel…or a giant bird! Love the reflection in the water. So powerful!

Thank you 🙂 I hadn’t seen the angel — but she’s definitely there.

So lovely. I miss silence. No matter how hard I try, there is always noise to drown out.

Difficult to have silence with your boys around, but as a friend of mine always claims “noise is fine so long as it’s happy noise.”
