Muriwai Beach is a place to which I return again and again. It is the closest west coast (and therefore surf) beach to home, but the attraction lies more in its illusion of endlessness, and the spectacular sunsets so often seen there.
Last night was no exception.
Editing the shot, I accidentally found a new feature in Snapseed which re-lit it as a scene more closely resembling early morning.

Other variations on the edit suggest (to me) not only different times of day, but perhaps different seasons. What do you think?
The task for this week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge is to find variations on a theme.
As an aside, I found this quote by the great American photographer Dorothea Lange. I’m not sure I agree, but it is certainly food for thought.

Ardent admirer of Lange … perhaps she needed that mindset to be able to continue to photograph distress and deprivation. Suspect she loved her subjects and hated their circumstances.

Beautifully done with the editing. As you suggested, different edits give the feel of different seasons – some images exuding more warmth compared to the others. Can also definitely see the illusion of endlessness. That horizon seems to stretch out on and on and on in the distance. Looked like a lovely walk by the beach and a great sunset too 🙂

I like the morning edit, but I suppose the light should really be coming from the opposite direction. Still the colours on the beach are magnifique! I fear that Dorothea Lange has a point. I am mildly obsessed with ‘my’ lighthouse.

It’s remarkable how a filter can change the whole feel of a photo. Fascinating. But I like the first best because it is the authentic one!

Oh, these are mobile photos, since you edited them in Snapseed? Wow. They’re divine as per usual. Snapseed is my favourite photo editing app, though I don’t get such stunning results with my mostly crappy photos of course. I like number 1-2 the most from your variations.

These are lovely, Su, and make me think I’d best take another look at Snapseed when I get a chance. As for the Lange quote, I guess I subscribe to that more than a little, my passion being nature for the most part.

I have a few sunrises I have returned to many times. Sometimes, a picture is so good you need to keep trying to make it perfect.

Lovely Muriwai beach you have captured it so well. Is that where the gannets nest? A long time since I’ve been there.

Yes; the gannet colony is at the southern end; at Maori Bay. Not many left now, the breeding season seems to be almost over.

These images are beautiful and I agree the edits do suggest different times of day and different seasons. Such a beautiful place for you to sit and reflect. A perfect subject for photos and a great retreat to return to.
Interesting quote. I think I can relate. I like taking pictures but I LOVE researching. So applying her quote to my passion, I have to say that I kind of get what she is saying. There are a few people connected to my tree that I have strong negative feelings for, and yet I keep revisiting their story hoping to find details of respite for those they hurt. I also have people I dearly love and revisit them to make sure their story is told well so that my posterity can love them as I do.

I understand this totally. I love the visual pleasure of photography, but my alter-ego is definitely data
-geek. My family history research is part of this. I love that you connect with people in your tree: positively and negatively, and the way you need to know as much as possible about both and pass that on.
