One of the things I enjoy about the Changing Seasons project is how it encourages me to reflect (usually at length) on the month that has gone. Sometimes, there seems to be a theme, or some sort of unifying imagery to the time-period. Other times, it’s just a bunch of random days.
March seems very much the latter.
My garden continues to be a source of great pleasure, not to mention edible treats. Colder temperatures and increased rainfall have not only helped the plants to thrive, but provided some nice photographic moments.
Otherwise, life has been lived off-camera. The Big T’s birthday occasioned some nice meals out and trip to the theatre (1984 — highly recommended).
The boy-child started university and has risen to the challenge of study, work and some personal dramas.
And despite my love of our garden, the Big T and I recognise that it really is time for us to move on. Our house is too big and we no longer have any practical or emotional ties to this area.
We have begun interviewing real estate agents and looking at properties to buy. A trip to Whangarei Heads last weekend allowed us to largely cross one potential “new home” area off the list — despite finding a very cool piece of cliff-top for sale.
We’ve talked about moving often over the years, and usually found reasons to stay put so neither of us is exactly holding our breath this time.
But who knows.
About The Changing Seasons
The Changing Seasons is a monthly challenge, originally hosted by Max at Cardinal Guzman. I’ve taken over hosting duties this year, and if you would like to join in, here are the guidelines:
The Changing Seasons Version One (photographic):
- Each month, post 5-20 photos in a gallery that you feel represent your month
- Don’t use photos from your archive. Only new shots.
- Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons so that others can find them
The Changing Seasons Version Two (you choose the format):
- Each month, post a photo, recipe, painting, drawing, video, whatever that you feel says something about your month
- Don’t use archive stuff. Only new material!
- Tag your posts with #MonthlyPhotoChallenge and #TheChangingSeasons so others can find them.
If you do a ping-back to this post, I can update it with links to all of yours.

Best wishes in your new home journey. I have been wanting to move for a long time and haven’t been able to mobilize my husband at all. I will have to live vicariously through your journey. How exciting!!

Thanks Joanne. I’m glad that the Big T and I agree on it, but it hasn’t made the process any faster. We’ve got to this point before, and there always seems to be something that’s kept us here.

Good luck with finding a new home – I love the part where you get to look at homes, but hate everything after that, from making an offer to closing to moving.

Totally agree with you on that!

Thanks Sarah. I’m not crazy about house-hunting, but that’s probably because the last time I had a toddler in tow, and was living with the in-laws, so there was quite a lot of pressure to find somewhere. 🙂
LikeLiked by 1 person
More than a little pressure in that situation – this time sounds like a virtual walk in the park compared to that!

I adore your red coffee pot and cup and saucer! As for moving. Well… I wouldn’t buy a plot close to the edge of a cliff that’s for sure, here our cliffs have a habit of falling into the sea. But I would love to live within walking distance to a beach. My OH looks at me in horror when I mention that perhaps this isn’t our final home.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hehe. Our cliffs do the same thing, which is one of the reasons we didn’t seriously consider the land on the Whangarei Heads despite the beach being adjacent and very private!

Shame. Sounds like a perfect location.

Lovely location, but very windy, and of course, prone to falling into the sea 😦

Thanks Marilyn. The dream is to buy land and build an eco house so that we don’t have huge bills and lots of maintenance to deal with when we’re older. T is incredibly handy (he is an engineer) and we’ve both done lots of DIY, so we kind of know what we can do and what we need the professionals for.
But of course, all that is dependent on leaving here first 🙂

So beautiful. On the one hand, I hope to never move again. On the other hand, my house is too big and we need to downsize (says me, not husband). good luck!

Thanks Luanne. We’ve been in our house for 18 years — which is 4.5 times longer than I’ve ever lived anywhere. Maybe it’s just that I’ve forgotten how stressful moving is, but I’m itching to do it 🙂

How exciting! What are you looking for? How far will you go from where you are now? A new stage in life, a new adventure!

Out of Auckland definitely. How far away is the tough one. We don’t really want to be too far from the boy-child, but most of the place we like are at least a few hours drive away. The dream is an eco-house on a few acres where we can have gardens and an orchard, and maybe some chickens and lots of bee hives. And studio space; lots of studio space 🙂

Sounds heavenly. And a few hours isn’t too bad. Our daughters live 2 hours (Boston) and 3 hours (Brooklyn) away, and we see them all the time. But maybe that’s a US thing.
LikeLiked by 1 person
2-3 hours is pretty do-able here too. One place we’re keen on is about 6 hours away, but I guess we can always fly 🙂

Good luck with the house search. Is it going to be a tree or sea change? I worked for Barfoot and Thompson the real estate agents in Auckland in the 1980’s I assume they are still in business. I actually love looking at houses. Will be back next week with my March reflections.

Thanks Pauline. Yes, Barfoot and Thompson are still going, and still owned by the families. We’ve been talking to one of their agents in the last few days. 🙂

Turns out I’ve been publishing in the style of The Changing Seasons for a while on my obscure little site.
It’s a monthly gallery that contains a photo-per-day produced in that month.
Henceforth I’ll add the MonthlyPhotoChallenge and TheChangingSeasons tags.
