Cows are not orderly animals. I know this because the Big T and I drove behind this herd being moved to a new paddock. A straggley line ambled along about five kilometres of country road near Tuapeka in Otago, NZ.

They run down hill we discovered! The farmer suggested we drive through the herd, but we were a bit chicken. In the end a guy in a Ute did that and we followed in the “slipstream.” 😂😂

Hehe. I think these girls were seriously out of their comfort zone. It wasn’t the route to the milking shed, rather a muster and major relocation.

They do seem to dislike change. I dread it when the calves are removed from the cows as the noise they make is unbelievable!

I love this picture. The slow moving cows, the background scenery. Tells a peaceful story to me. Although I imagine if you were in a rush to get somewhere, peaceful would be the last thing to be feeling! LOL!!!

Luckily we weren’t in a hurry. And we’re in a rentL car, so we’re happy to keep our distance and not risk dented panels. I’ve felt the damage kicking cows can do!!

They look pretty orderly to me! Have you ever followed a crowd of human beings in a “march”? I think the cows are more orderly here. 🙂 And the farmer said to drive through the herd?? That would make me very uncomfortable.

I’ve been on lots of marches, none of which got out of control luckily. The cows were pretty crazy and we didn’t really want to drive through the herd in a rental car. Luckily there was a guy in a truck who moved in front of us and we could follow in his wake.

I am not sure whether I would have been more worried about hitting a cow or a cow hitting us! Glad you made it through.
No, no marches that got out of control, but certainly we weren’t marching in lock step all in a line!

😀 we were pretty confident that the only car to cow contact would be initiated by the cow. They seem remarkably unfazed by the vehicles, but prone to sudden changes of direction. And they are huge!

Hehe. Out of Auckland (and Christchurch), the only traffic jams T and I have been in have involved cows or sheep. They are MUCH more entertaining, but also smellier. 🙂

We were in a rental car, and a bit nervous about trying to drive through the herd in case they stampeded — despite the farmer saying we could. In the end, there was a guy in a pick-up with some sort of farm company logo on it, and we persuaded him to drive ahead of us. He was a bit reluctant. Apparently he told the Big T “heifers can be a bit tricky, but I’ll give it a go” in a British west country accent.
