There are lines, and there are lines. These days, the only trains that run from the Dunedin Railway Station are for sightseeing only.

What an interesting shot. Sunrise?

Sunset. The only time the rain stopped since we got here.

Nice shot. Kind of sad about the demise of the railways

I agree. NZ used to be such a world leader in railways.

When we lived on the West Coast there were remains of the old foundries where rolling stock was built or repaired… now we import everything…

😕 a tragedy, right. The loss of railways— here and in other places — is one of the worst examples of squandering investment, infrastructure and talent.

Deep in the heart of Hobbiton?

I don’t know if Dunedin was a Hobbit location. Hobbiton is in the North Island, in Matamata. I’m not a fan, so don’t really know what was shot where.

Me too. Rail travel here is pretty much an urban commuter thing, or an over-priced tourist experience. 😕

Love the sets of lines. Definitely takes your eye out to the distant horizon.

Thanks Amy. Dunedin is so hilly it’s difficult to find many distant horizons.

What a shame about the trains, Su, but what a lovely shot, full of the anticipation of a trip, the ending of a lovely day, or, if you don’t know it’s a sunset, the excitement and hope of a new day.

Thanks Janet. I still get excited at railway stations, even though I hardly ever use trains and when I do, it tends to be to get to quite mundane places. But there is something special about railways, no matter the destination.

Great shot! Beautifully romantic with that sunset! This would be perfect for history related film shootings, like Downton Abbey. 😊

Thank you.
New Zealand used to be a very rail-oriented country and our main cities have beautiful railway stations that date back to around 1900 (ish). They are perfect as film locations, and in fact the Auckland Railway Station was used quite extensively in the film ‘Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence’ — which starred David Bowie. I remember when it was being shot; we used to hang out around the station in the hope of seeing Bowie 🙂
