Life isn’t about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself. — George Bernard Shaw
When I was young, I remember the notion of “finding yourself” being talked about — in popular culture at least — as a thing that people (young, middle class, white people) could do.
At 12 or 13 it seemed terribly glamorous and infinitely desirable.
I also remember my father — a no-nonsense, working-class member of The Silent Generation (1)– scoffing. His mantra was more or less “if you can’t find yourself in the mirror, then running of to join a commune isn’t going to help.”
Perhaps that’s why this quote appeals to me so much. It balances my desire to reach for something beyond an unexamined humdrum existence, with a sneaking feeling that my dad’s pragmatism resonates more with me that I would have ever have wanted to admit.
More importantly, it acknowledges that we are all work in progress.
The Three Day Quote Challenge works like this:
1) Thank the person who nominated you
2) Post a quote for 3 consecutive days ( 1 post each day )
3) Nominate 3 bloggers each day
I’m grateful to Ju-Lyn at Sunrise, Sunset for inviting me to join this challenge and giving me reason to reflect on quotes and ideas that are meaningful to me.
If you haven’t already been invited to join this, and would like to — please do.
I for one am happy to read all the extra words of wisdom (or fun) that are sent my way.
Indeed we are all a work in progress. 🙂 Amanda

Perfect quotes, and I completely agree with your dad’s pragmatic approach to this and reminds me of the saying that the only things we can find on an island are the things we bring with us.

I hadn’t heard that saying!! I’m a fan of the BBC radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’ and when I read your comment. I thought of all their “castaways” and whether they would choose their desert island items differently if the saying was literally true.

I like photo, quote, and your story, Su. Unfortunately, too many people spend all their time creating something that’s not good for them or for others. We should all take stock of what we’re creating, in all areas.

Gee. I mean the quote you picked. I also like your dad’s saying. I think I should just go back to bed at this rate. Or concentrate at the very least.

I figured that, so no prob. But feel free to go back to bed. I’d quite like to do that today 🙂

🙂 As my mother used to say to me ‘ “Concentrate, Tracy. Concentrate.” Parents often get it right.

Mine used to say I had my “head in the clouds”yet I’ve turned out to be the most grounded and practical of my siblings.

I think your dad hit the nail on the head. Just get on with life, with a bit of luck creativity will find you…

I can hear my Dad scoffing, too; about finding yourself. He was always very creative, a work in progress.

Mine too. He was born into poverty, started work at 14 and even in his 80s is still as active as his failing heath allows. In his own way, he is very creative — always able to make things and fix stuff for us.

A poignant quote, and thoughtful reflections (and I just love that photograph!).
You have triggered my memories on my efforts to Find Myself. I remember becoming increasingly agitated as a young adult as I felt more and more lost. It was only when frustration and hitting rock bottom (or at least, that’s what it felt like then) compelled me to Stop. And let things Be. That was when I had the time & space to really get to know myself and the process of growing could continue.

Thank you. 😀 I think there is such pressure on young people to be and do things before they have had time to grow into their selves.
