It rained all through the holiday weekend, and I really didn’t feel like leaving the warmth of home. It meant that meals were a bit “creative” and the fruit bowl is now empty.
Regular Random is a photo challenge hosted by Desley Jane at Musings of a Frequently Flying Scientist. If you’d like to join in:
- choose a subject or a scene
- spend five minutes photographing it – no more!
- try to not interfere with the subject, instead see it from many angles, look through something at it, change the light that’s hitting it
- have fun!
- tag your post #regularrandom and ping back to Desley’s post
Outstanding rainy day photo creations!

Nice Japanese feel to these, Su. We had a bit of rain today despite the “only 30% chance”, but now the sun’s out and it’s lovely. Have to have rain, though, so I’m good with that.

Thanks Janet, the background fabric is Japanese and I do love that simple aesthetic. Hope the sun keeps shining for you (not that I’m anti-rain) 😀

Thank you Amy. I have a fascination with obi, and am getting quite a collection in different colours.

Obi?

The sash that is tied around the waist of kimono. They are incredibly long and often beautifully patterned. I found a shop that sells old obi really cheaply. They can be picked apart and the fabric used for other things — bags, cushion covers, photographic props 😀 I’m a sucker for lovely fabric.

Ah, of course—that obi! I didn’t realize that was what that was in the photo.

Lovely scenes. I have never eaten persimmon or even heard of tamarillo, but I do recognise the Ginkgo leaf! As already mentioned, very Japanese looking.

😀 persimmons are one of the best things about this time of year for me. They used to be quite uncommon and imported, but must be grown locally now as they are so abundant. Tamarillos are a nightshade — in fact they were called tree tomatoes when I was a kid (like kiwi fruit was Chinese gooseberry). They’re native to South America, but apparently grown quite weirdly in Aus and South Africa as well as here.

I thought the tamarillos looked like tomatoes. Do they taste similar?

I think so. They are quite acidic. The skin is pretty tough, so we normally just scoop out the flesh. The juice is very dark red and stains something terrible 😀

Best keep away from me then. I stain everything! Especially when cooking! Really need to use the apron I have.

Hehe. It’s taken me years and many ruined shirts, but I finally reach for the apron before I start cooking. 😀

Hehe! Totally know what you mean with having to be creative food wise because it´s too cold to go out (not at the moment of course but I do remember a thing called winter 😉 ). Such beautiful colors, the obi is the perfect background! I think I´v never tried a tamarillo but I love persimmons – even have cultivated two trees out of seeds from fruits I once ate. Sadly they never grow blossoms – so no fruits. But they´re still lovely. 🙂 xxxxxxx

What a great idea to cultivate the trees. Shame they don’t blossom. I will have to add “persimmon trees” to my wish-list for the forever-house garden. xxxxxxx 😀
