Part of my mini-orchard. The lemons and grapefruit and really good this year. I have taken backyard citrus trees for granted — and provoked much hilarity in my British relatives when I innocently wondered where there lemon trees were😂
Backyard citrus trees are something of an institution in old-school NZ gardens. We have lemons and grapefruit in abundance, and even manage a few oranges. The mandarin tree is quite newly planted so isn’t fruiting much yet. Maybe next year!!
Citrus trees generally seem to do really well in Auckland. Oranges less than other fruit; our tree gets squillions of fruit buds, but only a dozen or so ripe fruit.
Mmh, it´s worth a try I think. I´m currently growing three little mango trees but since I took the cores from cultivated and very likely hybrid mangoes I doubt they will ever develop flowers. The leafes are lovely though and I always like watching things grow. 🙂
Oh now I’m envious – your own mandarin tree 🙂

Having your own mandarin tree feels very exotic to this northerner!

Hehe. I kind of take backyard citrus trees for granted. I was horrified when I moved to England and discovered people bought lemons!

How wonderful! Take some photos of your garden—not macro, but an overall one?

Will do. When the mist lifts and I can see the garden 😀

The rarer the fruit the more delicious they appear to be be. Great macro, so real I could almost taste the mandarin!

Thanks Peter. You’re so right about deliciousness being related to scarcity 😀

I’m as astonished as everyone else that you can grow a mandarin tree! Lucky you! Jealous me!

The blossom must smell divine in the spring though.

Do you think you could grow one in a pot? I have seen that here. 🤔

That’s a great idea, even if they don’t fruit — having a little bit of the tropics around would be lovely.
