I almost didn’t reach for my camera when a kereru swooped down on our cabbage tree this morning.
Normally by the time I’ve got the lens cap off and focused the camera, the bird has flown.
But not today.
The fruit must have been very appetizing because I actually had time to swap lenses and capture a bunch of shots before I had to dash off to an appointment.
So beautiful and colorful ๐

Inevitably the ONE time I don’t pull out the camera, the bird just sits there and waits until I finally do it … and THEN he flies off.

I’m not sure which I found was more fascinating – the bird or the tree. The bird is gorgeous (I’ve never seen anything like it) but the tree is beautiful in its own right. The first photo in particular made me think of the bird as an unusual ornament in a floral arrangement ๐

That’s what I thought, too, Joanne! And if you had to make a Christmas ornament, this bird on this branch would be absolutely gorgeous.

I so love how you guys make me see my โeverydayโ through new eyes. I am so used to the cabbage tree, Iโve never really appreciated how pretty it is in flower.

I love it when that happens and I see an ordinary something with new eyes. Glad to help ๐

They look psychedelic. Or like one of those pictures of the cosmos. Very pretty! I’m glad you took a chance on grabbing the camera!

Yay to the bird for not taking off early!! I really can’t stand it if you grab for your camera and by the time you’re ready the animal has fled! ๐ Such beautiful shots, it looks so pretty and colourful it makes my heart sing with joy! ๐

I can only think that the berries were so delicious that the bird just had to gorge itself, however long it took, and whatever else was going on.

Note to myself – provide birds with delicious berries or insects to get great pictures! ๐

Breathtaking, Su. Thank you!! We donโt have such colorful birds here in the Bay Area of Northern California.

New Zealand has very few indigenous animals, but our birds are often very colourful.
