In her recent Changing Seasons post, Sarah at Art Expedition included her recipe for beeswax lip balm, along with some lovely photos of the finished product.
It looked sooo good, I had to try making some.

It was easy to make, tastes nice (I added some vanilla flavour), and seems to work well. Even using mainly organic ingredients, plus buying flavouring and the little aluminium pots (which should be reusable), my lip balms cost less than half the price of the brand I used to buy.

But more importantly, I know exactly what went into them, and I understand the process — which means I can experiment with different flavours or oils.

I use chapstick and other lip products all the time. I haven’t tried beeswax—looks great.

True. I’ve developed an intolerance to all sorts of quite ordinary products and chemicals in the last couple of years, so this is part of my attempt to avoid itching and sneezing. Both highly attractive 🙂

It helps that, making it for myself, I don’t have to add preservatives or anything like that.

I am very impressed with your effort Su. I have only brought similar products at local markets wherever we are. You do make it look effortless, and I really should try it! Natural products are the best, and I love a natural citrus fragrance.

It really is ridiculously easy, and quite cheap. I bought the beeswax and cocoa butter for another project, and use coconut oil anyway. I worked it out that 1/3 of the total cost was the basic lip-balm ingredients; 1/3 the tin and 1/3 the vanilla.

Yes: it is good to support the small businesses that trade at markets, but that has to be weighed against balancing the family budget.

Love this! I have made my own soap and beeswax candles as wedding favors before, but it did not cross my mind to try out homemade chap stick! Thanks for the idea!

nice photos of this craft – and you made a good point – about knowing all ingredients – because i heard that sometimes there are hidden stuff in products – to give it travel and shelf life.
and so this pure and basic lip balm is extra nice.
I use lanolin and have some in a tiny container.
Maybe sometime I can try this balm. hmmm I will go and check Sarah’s site too

Thanks Yvette. I’ve starting making most of my skincare products (haven’t tried a cleanser yet), and I am really happy with how they work, as well as how easy they are to make. I love how I can test each ingredient before I actually use it.

I’m so happy you tried this out, Su! Like you, I’m amazed that it’s actually cheaper than anything produced bought even though I only use organic ingredients. And it IS so good to know what’s in it, isn’t it? I’ve always been baffled at the longs lists of ingredients for lipsticks and wondered what it all was, since I haven’t studied chemistry. It can’t actually be all good what’s in it, can it? xxx

I’m so happy with them 😀 I figured out that 2/3 of my production costs were flavouring and packaging, so mine were relatively expensive, but still waaay cheaper than mass produced, no -organic bought ones. I hate the feel of lipstick — always have — but the balm is lovely. I’m guessing I could tint it with something other than lipstick (beetroot powder maybe 😂😂), as I’m reluctant to add even a little bit of lipstick to my lovely balms.

Aronia berries and blueberries could work too I imagine! 😄 If you like blue lips that is. 😉 Used to be quite a thing in my teens. 😂 Turmeric also had a lovely colour maybe if you mix it with the beetroot… Ah, now you’ve made my mind spinning with ideas! 😄

Fantastic. Often two or three ingredients make perfect products like this. The big companies really got it wrong somewhere along the line
