When the familiar surprises

“Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.” — Henry Miller

I have a favourite walk that takes me round a cul de sac of gardeners — or perhaps people who hire gardeners. Either way, I get to enjoy the ever-changing exhibition of nature in their park-like yards. Today I noticed — probably for the first time — a (lily pilly?) hedge sending out some wonderful red leaves. With a macro lens on my camera, it looked truly lovely. Definitely a golden moment.

  1. Wonderful quote! I can’t imagine having your own garden and not wanting to tend for it yourself. A bit like with children – why get them and then give away to nannys the whole time! I would want to be spent every minute I could with them.

    • I guess I understand when gardens are large and people get older, but I’m like you — time in the garden (or with the boy-child) is precious and not to be given away. One of my brothers used to do gardens for rich people around south-west London, and they pretty much left him to it. Their gardens were “sets” in the performance of their lives — all about image.

      • I have a hard time understanding how a garden can be about the image. For me gardens are places of joy – children playing, gathering fruits and vegetables, enjoying peaceful moments… it’s no wonder I’m not rich, I so don’t get their attitude! 😂

        • That is because you are an artist and a creator, rather than a consumer. It’s taken me a long time to figure this out because it is alien to me as well, but I do know people who basically don’t make anything (except money) and take pride in paying to have their image of themselves created by others’ labour. I used to think I was weird for not feeling that way. Now I feel kind of sad for them.

          • Tell me about feeling weird! The stares of some when I tell them about baking my own bread! You’d think I’m a criminal or lunatic of some sort! 😂
I know a couple of people who are obsessed by their earnings, define themselves over it. It astonishes me every time.
