Standing on our own two feet

I’m running out of month in the 30 Days, 30 Songs challenge so today’s pick is as much about the singers as the song. Two of my absolute heroes (heroines) — Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin. Irresistible.

My dear friend Sarah at Art Expedition is hosting 30 Songs, 30 Days during June. You can see her latest musical choice here.

  1. OMG – this is รผber-fab! Yet another combo I had no idea about (due to the fact that I’m more a Baroque Girl, in every sense of the word!). Which, of course, doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy VERY MUCH stuff like what you’ve been presenting these last days…. I so enjoyed your choices and the ‘stories’ attached to every song. What an incredible richness of themes and ideas. I don’t dare to go to your friend Sarah’s site for fear of losing myself for the whole day….
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, dreams, experiences via this music-themed month. It’s La fรชte de la Musique today in France – so Well Done….!

    • Thank you so much. Iโ€™m really glad you are enjoying this series. Iโ€™m having such fun doing it, but am starting to get concerned that there are still so many songs I would like to include. I may have to make musical posts a more regular thing.

  2. Now there was a time when they used to say
That behind every – great man.
There had to be a – great woman.
But in these times of change you know
    That it’s no longer true.
So we’re comin’ out of the kitchen
‘Cause there’s somethin’ we forgot to say to you (we say)
Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.
Standin’ on their own two feet.
And ringin’ on their own bells.
Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.
Now this is a song to celebrate
The conscious liberation of the female state!
Mothers, daughters and their daughters too.
    Woman to woman
    We’re singin’ with you.
The inferior sex got a new exterior
We got doctors, lawyers, politicians too.
    Everybody, take a look around.
Can you see, can you see, can you see
There’s a woman right next to you.
Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.
Standin’ on their own two feet.
And ringin’ on their own bells.
Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.
    Now we ain’t makin’ stories
    And we ain’t layin’ plans
’cause a man still loves a woman
And a woman still loves a man
    (just a same though)
