Day 29 of 30 Days, 30 Songs. I’m looking at the list of possible songs I made at the start and wondering why so few have been posted — and how those that have made the cut.
Simple choice today. Patti Smith is incredibly talented and Because the Night (written with Bruce Springsteen) is a great song.
Take me now, baby, here as I am
Pull me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed
[Pre-Chorus]
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I’m in your hands
Take my hand come undercover
They can’t hurt you now
Can’t hurt you now, can’t hurt you now
[Chorus]
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
[Verse 2]
Have I doubt when I’m alone
Love is a ring, the telephone
Love is an angel disguised as lust
Here in our bed until the morning comes
[Pre-Chorus]
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand as the sun descends
They can’t touch you now
Can’t touch you now, can’t touch you now
[Chorus]
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
[Bridge]
With love we sleep
With doubt the vicious circle
Turn and burns
Without you I cannot live
Forgive, the yearning burning
I believe it’s time, too real to feel
So touch me now, touch me now, touch me now
[Chorus]
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because tonight there are two lovers
If we believe in the night we trust
Because tonight belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because tonight belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
10,000 Maniacs did a good cover of this inย 1993. Worth listening to.
Sarah at Art Exhibition has hosted 30 Days, 30 Songs during June. You can hear her latest choice here.
Definitely a great song, Su.

Such a great song. I had only heard the Patti Smith version–so this this was great hearing two versions of the same song.

I love both. Natalie Merchant has a great voice too.

I thought I didn’t know your song, Su, at least until I began to listen and then it all came flooding back. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Cracking song – both excellent versions. Just wondered if you’d featured any of Stevie Nicks? She has a great voice too.

There are so many wonderful woman singers I missed out โ I could easily fill another month just focusing on female voices. Stevie Nicks would definitely be there, and Aretha Franklin, Billie Holliday, Janisโs โ Joplin and Ian, Dusty Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush (the Big T would never forgive her omission). So many more. Sigh!

Kate Bush is one I turn off when she comes on the radio! I would add Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading.

Hehe. Heresy in the Big Tโs book.
Iโd definitely add Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading, Dido, Florence Welch, Sharleen Spiteri, the Chrissies โ Hynde and Amphlett …
Iโm feeling that Iโve hardly scratched the surface.

I think you could continue the music theme quite easily. There must be at least a month’s worth of female artists!

I’m thinking of less time intensive ways to carry on. Definitely not a post a day again — for a while anyway ๐

A post a day is hard work unless a single photo. Maybe you could post a song a week or something like that.

Thatโs what Iโm thinking. I quite like the idea of changing themes (covers better than original, first record youโd admit to owning, first snog song, etc). ๐๐

Point made (from my previous comment)! I love Patti Smith. I love her voice and the way she looks. Last time we saw her, I canโt even remember what the song was, but she dedicated it to those we had lost and asked us to stand while she spoke the names of her losses – Robert Mapplethorpe, Fred Smith etc. It was just after my dad died, so about this time 4 years ago, and I just stood there with tears running down my face. I get quite emotional now just remembering.
I listened to 10,000 Maniacs. Not bad, but it needs Pattiโs voice.

I understand that. What an experience. I feel a bit emotional just imagining it.
Her look inspired my friends and me for quite a while. I probably even still have the narrow tie and possibly the jacket I used to wear with op-shop white menโs shirts. The tie probably still fits!!

๐. I made that joke myself the other day – a friend had been to a school reunion and someone turned up in uniform. I said I still had my school scarf and it fitted!

๐๐ I originally saw it as a sign, and the item was earrings.

Oh yes, I have earrings from many years ago and Iโve never grown out of them either!
