Common green bottle flies. Images: Su Leslie
“Our everyday world presents intellectual challenges just as daunting as those of the cosmos and the quantum, and that is where 99 per cent of scientists focus their efforts. Even the smallest insect, with its intricate structure, is far more complex than either an atom or a star.” — Martin Rees, Cosmologist and Astrophysicist

You’re right Su, there’s so much we still don’t know about our world.

Some of my plants are covered in green bottle flies this weekend.

They looks so pretty with that iridescent livery, but can be a nightmare for sheep farmers.

Needless to say, I think that fly is beautiful. If I was a fashion designer, I would be turning to the insect world for inspiration. 🙂

So true! I actually love learning about both kinds of scientific discoveries – big ones about our cosmos etc and why a toast spread with marmelade always lands on the wrong side when dropped to the floor. 😄 And it’s always amazing how beautiful those common flies can look – and how much you can hate them the next second when it’s buzzing around your head! 😂

Haha. They are definitely a lot more attractive when they’re aren’t too close.

That’s true for a lot of things, like flowers that smell of rotten meat – I’ve learned about those thanks to Darren from over at The Arty Plantsman. 😀
