That looks like a farmers field in August rather than a desert.

Our farmers would be very stressed by such brown landscapes. Rangipo is considered a desert because volcanic activity over millenia has left the soul so poor very little grows there.

It would be after harvest – what I see is the residue of burnt hay….

Ah! We don’t burn the residue here, though I remember seeing the stubble fires the first summer I lived in England.

We don’t burn the residue either but by the end of the season the fields look yellowed out…
