But there is no certainty—even in color. Filters, light, chemicals, etc.—everything is always somewhat distorted. As it is with all we perceive.

Outerbridge was a pioneer of colour photography, and did a lot of fashion/commercial work where colours have to match the dress or product. The filters, etc (digital and physical) that we use to play with “reality” were his tools for recreating it, and I’m guessing he made the statement within that framework. I’ve done a tiny bit of photography for print, and make sure that the colours in the object accurately made it all the way to the printed page was a nightmare.

I can imagine–especially since our perception of color changes depending on lighting and the angle and our own color sensitivity and vision.

I join the legions who really like the shot, Su. 🙂 I like the quote, although I’m not really certain I agree with its suggestion. Hee, hee.

Thank Janet. Outerbridge was, ironically, regarded as something of a pioneer of colour photography, much of it commercial where accurate colour registration is vital. He died in 1958, long before the digital age, so I suspect he meant the statement in a slightly different way to how we might read it now.

What a wonderful quote. I would call ‘suggestion’ grey. I like that. Not too committed….it could, maybe. Yes, please don’t pin me down. 😀

A different kind of beautiful. It lets you see the flower without the distraction of the gorgeous colour. Magical!
