    • Outerbridge was a pioneer of colour photography, and did a lot of fashion/commercial work where colours have to match the dress or product. The filters, etc (digital and physical) that we use to play with “reality” were his tools for recreating it, and I’m guessing he made the statement within that framework. I’ve done a tiny bit of photography for print, and make sure that the colours in the object accurately made it all the way to the printed page was a nightmare.

    • Thank Janet. Outerbridge was, ironically, regarded as something of a pioneer of colour photography, much of it commercial where accurate colour registration is vital. He died in 1958, long before the digital age, so I suspect he meant the statement in a slightly different way to how we might read it now.
