Tui feeding in kowhai tree. Image: Su Leslie 2019
Maybe I’m stretching the definition of elusive a bit here. Tui are abundant in our garden at the moment, with record numbers feeding on the kowhai, flax and fuchsia in the neighbourhood.
Photographing them is a different matter. Today is the first time I’ve managed to get close enough to focus my lens on the birds and not just the foliage.

A most beautiful and wonderful interpretation of ELUSIVE…. They look a bit like the ravens or the large crows roaming the trees right here, right now. Thanks for sharing.

The last one is especially beautiful with a clear view of the bird but still having a lot of the beautiful foliage. 🙂

You did well, Su. Aren’t they interesting? Somehow every bird I photograph is so well camouflaged by its surroundings. It seems it is the same for the Tui.

Thanks Tracy.
Yes, they seem comfortable around humans, but the tree has so many branches and stems that I really struggled to find a clear shot.

An upside down bird is perfect for down under 😂

In the third picture the elusive bird finally revealed itself to the photographer. Nice shots, Su!

The Tui is a bit of a acrobat Su. Was it hanging upside down in the first photo?

Yes; it was. They seem just as happy to feed upside down as upright.

You’ve done a great job – it is so hard when foliage and twigs get in the way, as they always do

Wonderful photos, Su! I’m still so happy for you that you caught the bird this time! 😄

Thank you. Me too: having to camp on the office balcony would have been really weird — especially for my poor neighbours below.

Lovely photos Su. I know what you mean too. Photographing birds can be the ultimate frustration but when you get a good one, it’s all worth it isn’t it.

I think it requires more patience than I normally have. 🙂
