It’s becoming easier here in terms of availability, but I’m conscious that price is a huge barrier for so many people. Industrial “food” is so much cheaper to buy, and as a society we’ve been quite good at not counting the cost of that in poor health outcomes and environmental degradation.

So true. Keeping the local community together supporting our farmers who in turn support the town makes for a better community keeping society in balance. Increased awareness where food comes from also provides an opportunity to improve environmental and sustainable agriculture in to the future.

The very best sort of buying when possible. 🙂 I do love honey and as I believe it’s Winnie-the-Pooh’s birthday today, the photo is perfect is well. I could go for a little something right now.

My husband likes honey and I have a coworker whose husband keeps bees, so we are the recipients of their hard work. Local and organic….the best!

Oh yum!!! What a great person to know. I would love to keep bees, not only for the honey but because beeswax is a great ingredient in homemade skincare, and I love beeswax candles.

Have you ever used beeswax wrap? I gave her a package for Christmas. It warms to your hands and is reusable. Amazing stuff.

Yes; I made some to wrap homemade bread in, and it’s been so good I made some more, smaller ones, recently.

I do miss my market stalls in Ludlow 😥 I used to buy home-made preserves (marmalade, jam, chutney) and fresh eggs and lots of other lovely local delights.

☹️ I can understand that. I’ve only recently stated shopping at the market regularly, and it has changed how I plan meals and cook. Our friend Duncan also sells duck eggs sometimes; they are delicious. Sadly his ducks aren’t laying at the moment.

I found often I would simply decide day by day what I would cook, but with supermarket shopping I plan a week’s menu at a time.

I’m the same. I’m lucky to have two fruit and veg shops nearby; one of which is starting to stock more local and organic produce. I guess the market for them is growing, because they aren’t as expensive — relative to non-organic — as they used to be.

Heyjude reminded me of Bay Area farmers’ markets, which I have missed more and more in the 15 years since leaving… although downtown Chicago wasn’t bad.

Ooh! I never had duck eggs! Do they taste different from chicken eggs?

I think it depends a bit on what the ducks are eating. They can taste a bit fishy, but those we had were just more-strongly flavoured and a bit richer than chicken eggs. They are also larger and keep longer because the shells are thicker apparently. We didn’t test their longevity though 😉

Ugh! Fishy tasting eggs! I had those sometimes when I was a kid because farmers used to feed their chicken with fish remains, maybe they still do but since I buy only animal friendly and organic eggs I haven’t had them anymore.
