It’s too hot to move much at the moment, but I was happy to take a short wander up the stairs to this Japanese tea house.
Shame there wasn’t a cup of tea waiting for me.
The tea house is a new addition to the Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum, near Morrinsville, NZ. The park is privately owned, but open to the public to enjoy art in the beautiful setting of an old quarry that has been transformed into an arboretum.

There are a fair few steps there! Perhaps you should suggest having a kettle and a few cups so people can brew their own.

I did wonder about that. There is a nice day-bed inside, and lots of reading material, so a wee stove and a kettle would be just the ticket.

I lived for almost a decade in this area. I don’t think this beautiful place was there back in the 1970’s. Must go for a look when I’m next in this area.

You will love it Pauline. John and Dorothy the owners are lovely and very inspiring people. We chatted to them both for quite a whole and came away wishing there were more folk like them around. And of course, both the art and the tres are lovely 😀

I have friends live in Te Aroha that I visit when we go to NZ. Must ask them if they have been to see the sculpture

It was quite popular for a while, with a programme of exhibitions. Then it closed for about five years because the owners couldn’t get funding for some additional help. It only reopened last September, and visitor numbers are still very low as people haven’t got to hear about it yet.

Having tea in a tea house is what you’d normally expect, isn’t it? But then, it’s a privately owned place and I find it already extremely kind of the owners to let visitors in and ‘have a wander about and pausing at the tea house’….
Had to laugh at your ‘it’s too hot’ phrase as I’m sitting here, huddled in my pyjamas & junky jumper, having tea and waiting (sort of) to have my shower afterwards…

Funny! Just before I came here, I read a post about Kyoto and climbing Mt Inari that included a photo very, very close to yours of the staircase leading up to the tea house. I love it when interesting little coincidences like this happen 🙂

Hopefully you’ll get the chance soon. Next week I’m going to Dublin to meet with Gilles after one of his sales conferences. It will be the first time I’ve ever gone on one of his work trips. Better late than never 🙂
