Hydrangeas, and more hydrangeas

I love hydrangeas. I also love the paintings of New Zealand artist Karl Maughan, whose work so often depicts lush and verdant gardens.

I was quite excited then to see this work, Salamanca Road, amongst the new(ish) acquisitions at the Waikato Museum in Hamilton.

  1. I’m growing a whole bunch in my yard because I love Hydrangeas. But I’m not entirely convinced you could easily get such color variety with plantings in the same soil. I’ve been trying to turn mine blue for ages, and because my soil is not acidic, they stubbornly ignore all my pleading and cajoling. (I’ve offered up tasty sulfur in an attempt to lure them over to the dark blue side. They apparently are having none of that nonsense and stick to the bright fuschia they seem to prefer.)

Sorry if I seem to be questioning the artist’s integrity. Maybe there are gardens where Blue and Pink can live side by side in harmony. Just not mine!
