Each WWI serviceman or woman from Auckland who died at war is remembered with a white cross or Star of David on the lawn at the Auckland Museum. Image: Su Leslie, 2017
Thanks. It was very sobering realising there are twice as many crosses this year than last year. Each year the casualties for 100 years ago are added, and 1917 was a terrible year with the battles in northern France.
They are adding new crosses each year, so these ones are for the casualties from 1914-17. They represent men and women from the Auckland region. The project is nationwide, and even small towns and settlements are putting up Fields of Remembrance for their local war WWI dead.
Lovely and sad.

Very powerful seeing all the white crosses and stars. Is the building really that color?

đŸ˜ƒ The building was specially lit. It’s usually a creamy, sandstone colour.

Thanks Heather; the whole Field of Remembrance carries such a sad feeling. Every name there representing some mother’s son or daughter.

I so hope not. But I haven’t been this anxious about the possibility for a long time.

Very impressive shot, Su. The clouds look perfectly dramatic and thus fit very well what goes round below them…

Thank you. This year there are so many more crosses than last year because 1917 was a terrible period of the War with so much death and destruction.

Ah, so this just represents those who died during the year of 1917?
