I’ve worked as a copywriter on and off for about 25 years; or about half my life writing in my clients’ voices. The consequence is that I rather lost my own.
Blogging is one of the ways I’m recovering my voice, and while I believe it should come through in all my writing, I also thought it would be fun to share some stuff more directly. So here’s the beginning of 10 Things Tuesday; loves, hates, secrets, desires – whatever takes my fancy and I think you might be interested in.
On the assumption…
that one day I’ll be incredibly famous and my life will come up in a pub quiz or trivia game, here are the correct answers to 10 questions that might be asked.
- My favourite flowers are freesias, though lilies come a pretty close second.
- I sat my University Entrance exams after I’d left school. The only place I could do the evening classes was a boys school, so ever since I’ve been able to – quite truthfully – write on forms that I attended Westlake Boys High School.
- I’d be a vegetarian if I didn’t love eating duck.
- I’ve seen Gaylene Preston’s 1986 film Mr Wrong about 20 times; partly as research for a masters thesis on feminist film-making, but mainly because it’s brilliant.
- My Stage I politics tutor at University went on to become New Zealand’s first elected woman Prime Minister – Helen Clark. I don’t claim any credit for her political success.
- If my house was on fire and I could only rescue one thing (not including my partner and son) it would be my photo albums (ok that’s not one thing, but if I couldn’t take them all I’d barbeque trying to decide which one to grab).
- The best holiday I ever had was in Corsica, though Tahiti would be a pretty close second.
- The best thing I’ve ever bought that I couldn’t really afford was a huge painting of Arum lilies. It’s been in my life for over 20 years and I still don’t know the artist’s name.
- My favourite way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon is on the couch watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or Casablanca with a bowl of lemon sorbet from Giappo in Auckland, and a latte.
- It’s a cliche but … I want my funeral music to include Purcell’s Dido’s Lament – sung by Jessye Norman.
Great post! I’d save my photo albums too and my portable hard drive (it’s got thousands of my photos on it!) Breakfast at Tiffany’s is an awesome choice for a rainy Sunday afternoon! 🙂

Thanks :-). When I was writing the post I originally planned to say “three things” but I realised the other two were my hard drive and my iPad, and decided that I’d probably want to save my cameras and a couple of flash drives that I haven’t got round to downloading … and I realised that in the event of fire, I’d probably fry.
It’s a rainy Thursday here and if I didn’t have quite so much to do, I think I’d be putting Breakfast at Tiffany’s in the DVD player about now.

My camera! Oh my goodness… how could I not mention that!?! i’d definitely fry along with you!!!
That’s the trouble isn’t it… maybe we should just down tools and say ‘that’s it, it’s raining, and that means… glass of wine, feet up, DVD time!’ 🙂

Sounds delicious; but I doubt my son would see it that way – being left at the bus stop in the rain after sitting an exam. Sigh!

Written three years ago; I’d have to add as favourite films ‘Brief Encounter’ and ‘Love, Actually.’ And I’m wondering if I should revive ’10 things Tuesday’?

Hi – I think you snood revive it!
And I bet that painting is awesome – how fun!
Your movies sound fun and I will be checking out a couple when the time comes ….
Oh and have you seen “Babette’s feast” – check it out if you have not – 😉
Lastly – the question about what to grab of a fire – oh goodness is that a tough one!

I have seen Babette’s Feast; a while ago now, and for some obscure reason the thing I remember most is that Babette was played by the actress who played Lord Marchmain’s mistress in Brideshead Revisited back in the 1980s. Perhaps I should have added a question and answer to the post about my capacity to recall movie trivia. 🙂

I have a bag of important documents. I am supposed to grab those in an emergency. Boring, but, lol, I wonder if I would. I didn’t grab them in the earthquakes.

I have one of those too, though it’s actually a very heavy locked box that’s tucked away somewhere I can’t quite remember …. so probably not much chance I’d take that. 🙂

Probably these days I would be more likely to grab my laptop.

Oh, crikey, what to grab in a fire? My hard drive…..I would only be able to grab one thing…..but if anyone was going to lend a hand, then some albums and my B&W negatives….

Negatives!! I forgot them. I packed all ours up and stored them away from the prints when we moved back to NZ. They are still boxed up somewhere.
