Air, water, earth; the visible elements in my landscape. But the strongest force to shape Auckland and Northland is its largely unseen, but ever-present volcanoes — fire in its most extreme form.

Stunning picture …. I feel myself picking across the rocks towards that ocean!

It is a beautiful place, especially in winter when it’s relatively deserted. I was actually tempted to swim when we were there a few weeks ago. And it’s years since I’ve had a midwinter beach swim!

Do the volcanos rumble? Can you hear them?

The volcanic activity here tends to be one-off — but pretty massive. There is weakening of the earth’s crust in a particular place and it erupts. Then thousands of years later (hopefully), another weak spot appears and there is another eruption. Auckland has had over 50 of these in its geological history, but only one during the period of human habitation. And I’d like it to stay that way!

We’ll hope for the best on that one.

It was a beautiful day. One of those perfect mid-winter days of sunshine and calm that make it easier for us to endure the cold and rain to follow.

Thank you 🙂 Hard to believe it was only a few weeks ago. I’ve almost forgotten what sunshine looks like.

Thanks Sarah. It’s hard to believe after all the rain and wind and horrible weather we’re having that I only took that photo a few weeks ago. 🙂

Wonderful photo! The short depth of field makes it look truly three dimensional!
