I know that black is supposed to be slimming, but when it’s the background, it does rather highlight the plumpness (or indeed plumptiousness) of the garlic, chillies, eggplant and tomatoes that are staples in my kitchen.

Black’s a great back ground.

Thanks so much. With these, the ingredients always look more appetising than the finished dishes.

Those photos with their black backgrounds are exactly the type of still lifes I would love to draw. The way the light is shining on those chillies is enticing.

Iβd love to see the drawings if you do them. Would you use black paper to draw on?

Oh, I only meant Iβd like to draw something like your photos, Su. I wouldnβt dream of taking your ideas and using them for myself. I do a bit of that kind of drawing, just for my own enjoyment, and yes, I would use black paper as a background.

You would be very welcome to use any of my images as a basis for your work. Iβd be honoured actually,
Thereβs a huge difference between creating something in a different medium, from an image, and simply taking the image itself. I have no trouble with the former.
I really believe that creativity is one of the most important attributes we can have, and it should be nurtured and encouraged with as much sharing of ideas as possible.

Plumptiousness is a great word. From now on I’m no longer fat, I’m plumptious π

Thanks for sharing a photographic secret with us, Su! Indeed a black background makes the object stand out so much better. I will try this on my next photo journey.

Do you use lighting techniques or are you just good at capturing the light that is there?

I use natural light and a tripod for long exposures. I donβt really have any dedicated space, so have to shoot wherever I can with whatβs available. My fantasy is to have an actual room I could call a studio π

You are SO right on everything – and I cannot fathom out why my Hero Husband doesn’t like to see his darling wife in black….. When she needs ‘slimming’ so badly π

I think on people the most slimming colour is the one you love the best. π

It’s not at all that I like black best – in fact, the contrary applies to me. When I’m feeling fine, I can do subtle very well, but when it’s dark outside and everything looks unfriendly and I feel ‘I dont know what’, then it’s my call to colours…. And then again, sometimes I go for colours just ‘because’…. it’s really a matter of the feelings at the moment π
I do love your ‘view’ – I shall adapt it as of now π

I tend to go for either really bold colours, or black. I don’t do subtle or pastel very well. My current favourites are blue-y, turquoise-y shades.

Love the contrast and the drama of these shots! And of course the depicted goodies.π When I work with acrylics I almost always work with black as a background from which I then sculpt my colours into life, if that makes any sense.π Also perfect for starting anew if you’ve made a mistake. π
