Start singing “too ra loo ra too ra loo rye aye” to anyone of a certain age (around about mine), and I suspect many of us will start, if not actually dancing, then at least tapping our toes.
The song is “Come on Eileen” from the 1982 album by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. I found it impossible not to dance then, and nothing much has changed.

Oh yes, I definitely remember this! Mind you, I knew an Eileen at the time who definitely didnβt make me want to dance β¦

I worked with her. Not a happy experience. Fortunately she left soon after I arrived – not cause and effect of course! I worked with another Eileen before that and another one afterwards. Both became friends.

βΉοΈ the only Eileen I know is a librarian in Melbourne. She is lovely β and seriously into steampunk and cosplay β so can be relied on to have fabulous costumes on dress-up days.

I’ve done a fair bit of dancing to that song in my time, Su. π

I remember this song…..I never knew what they were saying, though! π Definitely a dance number!

I bought the album and studied the liner notes. Thatβs all that stood between me and daft-lyric embarrassment on many songs in those distant pre-Google days. ππ

Yay! Yay! Yay! Still dancing and singing!! This is such an awesome song! ‘We’re far too young and clever!’ π
Really – I can’t stop patting myself on the shoulder for thinking of this challenge! π

It is an excellent challenge; Iβm so glad you thought of it.
I was going to use the βfar too young and cleverβ line as my post title, but I couldnβt find the photo I wanted to go with it. π¬

That song is not familiar to me, but that lyric is—from an old folk song, no??

I think so. The song (in some versions) opens with an a cappella bit from the Irish folk song “Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms”. Itβs played on the fiddle in the song too.
