I could listen to this for the guitar alone.Β But the lyrics are unforgettable too.
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here
— Roger Waters / David Gilmour, Pink Floyd

Thank you for including Pink Floyd, Su. That song haunts me – the grief and loss (the loss of oneself and others). The senselessness. Well anyway, that’s how I interpret it. It goes with Sarah’s choice of Ironic.

I think our interpretations are very similar Tracy.

It drives me often up the wall when friends/family who don’t speak English, can’t be set alight with songs like this – such a great tribute! Thanks for including – and WITH the lyrics (they are laudable also on the YT upload) – such a help.

No matter how much I love this song, I have never read the lyrics through like this, and this part never stood out like this:
“Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?”
Brilliant.

An absolute classic. One of the few songs that when it starts playing, no matter where I am or what I’m doing, I just have to stop, shut-up, and put the world on pause for 4 minutes so I can fully appreciate it.

Wonderful choice Su. That guitar intro looks effortless when DG plays it, but it sure isn’t!

I agree about the guitar solo being brilliant on its own, but the lyrics are just brilliant too, so I think this makes it a perfect song! π
