Music, dancing, romance, rivalries and political machinations — what’s not to like?
Strictly Ballroom (1992), is Australian film-maker Baz Lurhmann’s directoral debut. Set in the world of competitive ballroom dancing, it’s a story about love and friendship, about following your dreams, and about doing the right thing when it really matters.
It’s also incredibly funny. And tongue-in-cheek. And uplifting. All of which I need right now.
You can find out more about the film and see a trailer at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) here.
And hopefully you’ll be able to watch the video below of John Paul Young singing his 1977 hit Love is in the Air, which he re-recorded for the Strictly Ballroom soundtrack.
Now get up and dance.
Fun fact:
The hit British TV programme Strictly Come Dancing gets its name from this movie — in case you didn’t know.

Ooh, now this is interesting. I have never seen this but I loved Luhrman’s ‘Moulin Rouge’, and grudgingly admit that the ‘Strictly..’ Tv show is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me..
This sounds a great fun choice to watch at the moment!

Never heard of any of these, Su. π My husband and I took ballroom dancing once, but unless you plan to do it often, there’s not really much point. Saved my feet, too. π

Loved it. Maybe I should watch it again. Probably have it on DVD.
I am not doing the Film Fridays, but I had a thought – The Lunch Box. An Indian movie. You would love it, Su.

I found a used dvd of Strictly Dancing yesterday and ordered it. Heaven knows when it will get here, but ThriftBooks is reputable, and it wasn’t much dosh. π€
Perhaps see if you can use them down there?

Thanks for that. I think DVDs are formatted for a different zone in the US and they wonβt play here unfortunately.

Let me mention something called VLC… an easy add-on with Firefox that enables me to play British dvds. π

π Iβm in full-blown dance mode, so itβs probably as well weβre doing social isolation.

I have never seen this re-made video of the song (which of course, I loved in the 70s) – such fun! I love dance movies …

I vaguely remember watching it when it first came out (I am blessed/? with the kind of memory that forgets books & movies almost immediately, so when I reread & rewatch, I get the thrill of newness!)
Time for a rewatch!

That is a blessing! I can reread books and not remember them, but films … my brain works in the opposite way.

I LOVE Strictly Ballroom, Su!!!! π It’s everything you’ve said and one of the films I can watch again and again. π Baz Luhrman’s one of my favourite directors and I know we have that in common. π
