The state of Victoria, including Melbourne, has 4200 active cases (18000 total cases), and has recorded about 400 deaths. Auckland currently has 111 active cases (NZ has had 1300 total cases). We are lucky that no-one has died in the current wave; the country’s Covid death toll since the beginning of the pandemic is 23. But to put it in perspective — NZ’s total population is about 5 million (Auckland has about 1.5 million) while the population of Victoria is 6.6 million.

Whatever the numbers, there are too many. Of course, here in the US we are over 170K in a country of 330 million. So we are 66 times the population of NZ with about 7400 times more deaths.

It definitely seems easier to contain the infection amongst a small population that occupies a fairly small land-mass.

I think I may have had one of their Shiraz when in Sydney. Certainly won’t be buying it here though it is over £20 a bottle and I don’t ever pay that apart from in a restaurant when you don’t have much choice!
